Margao was elevated from a village to the status of a town by a Royal Decree issued in the name of the Portuguese Queen Dona Maria I. The proclamation, signed on 3rd April 1778 at the Palace of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, followed a petition submitted by the Senate of the Chamber of the Province of Salcete. The decree was formally endorsed by Feliciano Ramos Nobre Mourão on behalf of the Queen.
