Loyola High School

Loyola High School, Margao, traces its origins to 13 July 1899, when it was founded as Union High School by the visionary educationist Roque Santana Gracias. Established at a time when formal education in Goa was still evolving, the institution played an important role in shaping modern schooling in Salcete.

In 1932, the school came under the administration of the Archdiocese of Goa, which renamed it St Theotonius Union High School.

A significant turning point came in 1944, when the Jesuits of Goa assumed charge of the institution. They renamed it Loyola High School in honour of their founder, St Ignatius of Loyola, the Spanish soldier-turned-saint who established the Society of Jesus in 1540. Under Jesuit leadership, the school developed a strong reputation for academic excellence, discipline, and holistic education rooted in the Ignatian tradition.

Over the decades, Loyola High School has grown into one of Margao’s most respected educational institutions, known not only for scholastic achievement but also for its emphasis on character formation, social responsibility, and extracurricular development. Generations of students have passed through its halls, contributing to diverse fields in Goa and beyond.
